David
Emery began his career while attending University. His potential
caught the attention of the Public Television station general
manager, and soon he was in charge of producing and directing
live public affairs programs, and creating promos for the station.
Emery moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of a career in
film production. He found work on some of the biggest commercial
sets of the time. His apprenticeship included watching and learning
from master craftsmen like Howard Zeiff, Bob Giraldi, Joe Pytka,
John Frankenheimer, Gilbert Taylor, Lazlo Kovacs, Caleb Deschannel,
Vilmos Zsigmond, and William Fraker. During this time, Emery
also traveled to Latin America as a cameraman/director on news
documentaries covering such controversial international 80’s
stories as the Sandinista-Contra conflict, Manuel Noriega, and
Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.
In 1988 Emery started producing for commercial director James
Gartner. They worked together for the next ten years, garnering
every national and international advertising award, with Gartner
winning the Director’s Guild of America Best Commercial
Director Award twice (and nominated six times). Emery moved
to New York in 1997 and began freelance producing for top directors
such as Joe Pytka and Michael Karbelnikoff. In 1999 Emery embarked
upon a directing career. In the past three years Emery has continued
to hone his directing craft, actively working on commercial
projects as well as broadening his work into the areas of music
video, television and film. His commercial clients include:
Mitsubishi HDTV, Novo Nordisk, Visa and Summa Health Care.
In addition to his B.A. in History & Telecommunications
from Indiana University, Emery has a Masters in Psychology from
the University of Santa Monica. He has been a member of the
Directors Guild of America since 1986. |
